William Passons

Churchill. William Passons was born 26 Mar 1806 in Charleston, Virginia, now West 
Virginia.  His parentage is unknown and his life a mystery until after he migrated to 
Indiana sometime before 1842 where he married Mary Price in Peru, Miami County.  
He and Mary separated sometime in 1844 and William reported on his application of 
disability pension that she died in that same year.  On 22 Jun 1846, William Passons 
was mustered into the 1st Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, Company B, in New 
Albany, Indiana.  Service record of Company B: 7 Sep 1846, Mouth of the Rio Grande; 
31 Oct 1846, Mouth of the Rio Grande, Texas; 31 Dec 1846, Mier, Mexico; 28 Feb 
1847, Matamoras, Mexico, 20 Apr 1847, Monterey Mexico.  According to his pension 
records, the Regiment was engaged in a skirmish with the Mexicans at Old Rinosa, 
Mexico, on or about 4 Jan 1847.  They were on the ship, Boston of Kuzan, crossing 
a part of the Gulf when they were blown ashore.  In the confusion of the battle, 
William was thrown against a barrel on the ships deck.  He sustained a wound in 
his left groin area which he carried for the rest of his life.  On another page of his 
application, he states this skirmish occurred at Pedros Island, Texas on or about 
30 Jun 1846.  I have no information which date is correct.  William further states he 
had land warrant issued to him as a Mexican War Soldier.  Private Passons was 
mustered out in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 16 Jun 1847 and returned to Peru, 
Indiana.  He married Susanna Michaels on 5 Apr 1849 in Tipton County, Indiana.  
They moved to Linn County, Iowa, where a daughter, Eliza Jane, was born 10 Jul 
1853.  William stated they moved to Kansas in 1884.  It is believed Susan Michaels 
Passons died in Quincy, Greenwood County, Kansas in 1870 though no record has 
been found to date.  William lived near his daughter, Catherine L. Butler, wife of 
Samuel Butler in Marshall County, Kansas for many years.  He died as William 
Parsons on 6 Apr 1904 in that place.  He and Susan Michaels hade five children: 
Marianna, John B., Catherine L., Eliza Jane and Christopher.  Submitted by Sharon
