My Great grandfather, John Padgett was born in Vernon Township, Washington County, Indiana on 19 May 1825 to Nathan Padgett and Sarah Ann Mathews. He enlisted on 1 Jun 1846 in the US Army at Indianapolis, Indiana. He was mustered into the army at New Albany, Indiana on 20 Jun 1846 and assigned to Captain McDougall's Company H, 1st Regiment of Indiana Volunteers for one year service. He was discharged from the service on 18 Jul 1846 at Fort Polk, Texas. He was awarded $8.00 per month on 29 Jan 1887, which was increased to $12.00 per month on 27 may 1880. He married Mary Magdalene Bower Sep 1847 in West Union Baptist Church, in Marion County, Indiana. They moved to Newton County in 1852. He died on 20 Jan 1891 in Washington Township, Newton County, south of Morocco, Indiana, and is buried in the Prairie Vine Cemetery, in Washington Township. John was the grandson of Thomas Padgett who served in the Revolution against the British. Thomas was born in Frederick County, Maryland and died in Forsyth County, North Carolina, and is buried in the Hope Moravian Cemetery in the same county.
