Thomas Grimes, Captain, the son of George and Elizabeth Donohoe Grimes, was born 18 May 1823 in Leeburg, Loudoun County, Virginia. He died 10 Feb 1876 in San Luis Valley, Saguache County, Colorado. Thomas married Sarah Jane Gildea on 2 Sep 1847 in Bowling Green, Indiana. Sarah was the daughter of James and Sarah Zenor Gildea of Clay County, Indiana and was born 9 May 1830 in Louisville, Kentucky. She died in her daughter's (Mary E. Crosley) home in Denver, Colorado on 20 Jul, 1900. They had 9 children, all born in Indiana. He moved to Colorado around Nov 1872 and obtained property in the San Luis Valley and was a cattle rancher. He died at Rito Alto, Saguache County, on 10 Feb, 1876. In the Civil War, Thomas was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 85th Indiana Infantry on 15 Aug 1862 and promoted to Captain on 1 Apr 1863. Captured at the Battle of Thompsonıs Station when the Union Troops were outnumbered and overrun, he was marched as a Prisoner from Tennessee to Richmond, Virginia to the infamous Libby Prison. He was exchanged for a Confederate of like rank and returned to duty. Thomas was discharged in 1865. Thomasıs brother, George Jr. was captured in that same incident and also sent to Libby prison.. George served almost 3 years in the Civil War, having been promoted from First Orderly Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant in the 85th Regiment on Nov 21, 1862, promoted to 1st Lieutenant May 21, 1863, and to Captain on Sept 1, 1864. George was also exchanged for a like officer of the South. Before the Mexican War, Thomas had tried his hand at panning for gold in California and giving that up, he returned to Indiana. Sergeant Henry Moss hailed from Clay County, Indiana. He married Jane Blanton (formerly Mrs. Sutcleff) in Morgan County. There were two daughters from her first marriage. There were three with Henry. There exists two letters written by Henry to Jane....one from Fort Belknap, Texas in late 1846 and a second from Buena Vista, Mexico in early 1847. He returned and both he and Jane are buried in the Bowling Green Cemetery in Clay County. Henry's father is one of the original founders of Clay County and Bowling Green. He died of Illness in Helena, Arkansas while serving in the war. He was the son of Martin Crouse and Susannah Waggoner. Martin was born in Ashe County, North Carolina in 1797. Susannah was born about 1800 in North Carolina. They were married in 1819 in North Carolina and came to Indiana in 1834 settling on the Clay/Owen County line near Patricksburg, Indiana, where they raised a family of 15 children. In 1880 Martin and Susannah moved to Illinois where Susannah died in 1881 and Martin died 13 Apr 1883. They are buried in the DeVore Cemetery in Jasper County, Illinois. Martin and Susannah had the following children: Winston; Evyline; Frances; William; Eli; Jacob; Calvin; Wady; Andrew; Stephen; Henry; Benjamin; Harrison; Fredrick; and Susannah. William was married three times, first to Daisy Kendall, who died in childbirth in 1848/49, second to Hannah Lenhart, who died in 1853, and to Angeline Haltom, who died in 1862. William and Daisy's son, Martin died at birth. William and Hannah had one son, Calvin, who was born in 1852. William and Angeline had two sons, Henry, born 1835/6, who died 4 Jan 1875, and Jacob, born Dec 1859 who died before Sep 1886. Source is Indiana in the Mexican War, Oran Perry, 1908. Charles D. Gilbert was b.Abt.1828 in Belmont Co., Ohio. He lived in Clay Co., IN when he joined Co. "K" 2nd Ind. Regt. and served as a Private during the Mexican War. He was wounded in the left thigh at Buena Vista, Mexico on 23 September 1847. He returned to Clay Co. and lived there until 1854 when he began a series of moves between Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas. He married Pheriba Collier (b.5 March 1837 in Martinsville, Ind.) on 28 January, 1855 in Clarke Co., Iowa. Pheriba was the daughter of Richard and Mary (Bales) Collier. They had 10 children : Thomas J., Richard M., Charles M., William, John, Mary A., Albert R., May. Norah B., and Laura P. Gilbert all born between 1858 and 1879. Charles D. Gilbert died 18 January 1885 in Woodson Co., Kansas and is buried in the Toronto Cemetery there. In an affidavit to the pension record application that Pheriba made on 14 December, 1887, she states that she had moved to Clay Co., IN with her younger children and was being supported by a W. F. Gilbert of Art, Clay Co., IN, who was not legally required to do so. This is the last record that I have of Pheriba. Charles D. Gilbert also served as a Corporal in Co. "D" of the 39th Iowa Infantry.
