10, 1824, is a son of Benjamin Nicholson, who was one of the prominent pioneers of
this county, having come here in 1812, and forting at Young's fort until the Indian
troubles were over. Benjamin Sr. purchased land in what is now Section 33 of this
township, where be cleared and farmed until his death. Benjamin F. has always made
farming his occupation, and by energy, and good management has secured 200 acres
of as good land as there is in the county. He was Second Sergeant of his company
in the Mexican war and was a participant in the battle of Buena Vista. As a Democrat

Samuel Churchill, mustered out 23 Jun 1847 at New Orleans, Louisiana, by Colonel
Samuel Churchill. He was wounded in the battle of Buena Vista. My great great
grandfather, Andrew H. Ratts, was a member of the Washington Rifles back before
the in mid 1800s, and I read in a book entitled "Washington County, Indiana" that
he came to Texas in about 1854. The author indicated that Andrew also kept a hand
written, detailed journal detailing his part in the Mexican war and stated also
that he was wounded in the battle of Buena Vista. I was wondering if that journal
might have been found it's way to the Washington county records, or if you knew
where I might need to look. I would just like to know where it might be as it is
a personal part of my history. The author didn't say where he saw it, only that
it existed. Thank you Sonja at email address SonjaGordon@aol.com
