Enlisted at Fort Clark, Indiana, 31 May 1847, to serve during the War. He was discharged 19 Jan 1848 at Vera Cruz, Mexico, on surgeon's certificate of ordinary disability. The discharge certificate identifies Milton Furnish as 23 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a light complexion, light hair, blue eyes, and a farmer by occupation. Milton Furnish was born in Rush County, Indiana abt 1825 and died [unmarried] on 11 Dec 1848. He was the fifth of ten children born to Benjamin Wells Furnish [1796-1851] and Tamer Corn [1796-1886]. The place of burial is unknown, although it could be the Harmony Baptist Cemetery near Matthews, Indiana where his parents are buried. Aaron Lawson Mr. Mounts: Just discovered your site and would like to pass on the following which does not appear in your records: My Great Grandfather had a brother, Aaron Lawson, who served with Co. A of the 4th Indiana Infantry. I have a copy of his military records which contain the following information. He mustered into service at Fort Clarke on 31 May 1847. At the time he was 21 years old and resided in Washington Township in Grant County. He was severely scalded near Galveston when the boiler on the steamship "Anne Chase" exploded. He was mustered out at Madison Indiana on 20 Jul 1848 and declared totally disabled. Capt. John W. Dodd was one of several who provided written testimony on his behalf. Aaron eventually moved to Champaign County Illinois near present day towns of Homer and Sidney. He died there in 1866.
