Bernice Scott Gress

11:53 am - Bernice Scott Gress, 81, 17 Lynwood Dr., died at 10:43 p.m. Saturday at Daviess Community. Born July 21, 1924, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Philip Fred and Leona (Smith) Schnarr. A 1942 graduate of Alfordsville High School, she also attended Lockyear Business College and Vincennes University. She retired from J.C. Penney as office and personnel supervisor in 1977 after 30 years of service. She was employed as tenant services coordinator for the Washington Housing Authority from 1978 to 1981 and previously served as the director from 1966 to 1977. She served two terms (1985-1992) as Daviess County Treasurer. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Otterbein United Methodist Women and the Golden Rule Sunday School class. She served on various committess and had taught a youth Sunday school class for several years. She was a patroness of Delta Theta Tau sorority and a member of the Alumnae Chapter. She was a member and past president of Monday Afternoon Club and a member of Vincennes University Foundation and Alumni Association. She was also a member of Eastern Star No. 210, former board member of Daviess County Red Cross, and 20-year member of Daviess County Cancer Society, serving two years as treasurer. She was a member of Washington Garden Club, a RSVP volunteer and member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Active in Republican politics, she served as vice-precinct committeewoman of Washington’s fifth precinct since 1984 and served as a delegate to Republican State Convention in 1988 and 1990. She was a member of Daviess County Republican Women and served as a delegate to Indiana Republican Women’s Convention in 1989 and 1991. She had served on the Washington Zoning Board since January 1993. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Philip F. and Brenda Scott of Bedford; grandchildren, Jessica and Jonathan Hendrix, and twins, Abigail and Catherine Scott; and sisters, Ruth Kail and Dorothy Essig, both of Washington. Her first husband, Lloyd W. Scott, whom she married Nov. 3, 1946, died Nov. 5, 1968. Her second husband, Clyde W. Gress, whom she married Nov. 29, 1980, died Dec. 26, 1984. Two brothers, Clyde W. and Leland J. Schnarr, are also deceased. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Otterbein United Methodist Church, with Revs. David Breidenbaugh and Curtis Hurley officiating. Burial will be in Sugarland Memory Gardens. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Gill Chapel, with a Delta Theta Tau service at 6 p.m., and after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
