SOLDIER DIES IN HOSPITAL

Francis M. Brewer Undergoes Operation Four Months Ago.

Francis Marion Brewer, son of Mrs. John F. Johnson, who lives near Crothersville, died at the Walter Reed Hospital at Washington, D.C., Wednesday, July 17, aged twenty-one years, four months and nineteen days. He enlisted in the army January 30, 1918. Last spring he underwent an operation and had been in the hospital for the last four months. He leaves four sisters and three brothers, two of whom are in the army, on in France and one in camp at Rockford, Ills. The funeral will be held at Vallonia but the date will not be determined until it is known when the remains will arrive.

OLD GLORY AT COURT HOUSE AT HALF MAST

Private Francis M. Brewer, Who Died in Washington is Thus Honored.

The flag at the court house was lowered to half mast today in honor of Private Francis M. Brewer, of Vallonia, who died July 17 at the Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C. he was twenty-one years of age and had been ill for several months. He underwent an operation in the spring and did not recover his strength. He was the son of Mrs. John F. Johnson, who lives near Crothersville.

The court house officials adopted the custom of lowering the flag each Wednesday in memory of any Jackson county men who paid the supreme sacrifice to their country during the preceding week.

Obituary of Private F.M. Brewer

Francis Marion Brewer was born in Driftwood township, February 28, 1897, and died at the Walter Reed hospital in Washington, D.C. He enlisted in the Medical Training corps January 30, 1918, and has since been stationed at Washington, D.C. He had been confined to his bed ever since April 1st. He underwent an operation the first of April from which he never was able to stand.

He was loved by all who came in contact with him. He leaves to mourn his departure, four sisters, Hattie and Alice, at home, and Mrs. Maude Duncan and Mrs. Carrie Dowden, also a loving mother and three brothers, George, who is in the service of the U.S. in France and Harry at home, and Jesse at Camp Grant, Rockford, Ill. He will be greatly missed by all.
