Home Cooking Secrets
of Athens No. 97 Crawfordsville Order of the Eastern Star
Crawfordsville, Indiana

Source of the cookbook from Hulda M. Smith and her neice Karen Bazzani Zach.

Here is a cookbook that you can tell was actually used, see the actual stains on the pages.  Passed to Karen from her Aunt Hulda, though lately it is more of a family keespsake.  You will find the recipes below in a album.

Below we have a self playing slide show.  By placing the cursor below the "Control Bar" you will see a description of the photo.  There is an icon "[ ]" on the right side of the "Control Bar" that by clicking on it the slide show will enlarge to "Full Screen".  You can then move forward or backward, at your own pace, by clicking on the right or left arrows.  Then there are full screen controls in the upper right hand corner.  Please enjoy!

Here are more helpful hints (from Mary Olsen in What's Cooming in Barren Co KY - Feb 28, 1977

HOUSEHOLD HINTS (Source: Olsen, Mary – What’s cooking in Barren Co KY) Feb 28, 1977
1 –To keep cookies fresh and crisp, place a crumpled tissue paper in the bottom.
2- When icing a cake the icing will not run off if a little flour is dusted on surface of cake.
3 – A good quick frosting is made by boiling a small potato, mashing it and adding powdered sugar and vanilla.
4- Try adding vanilla to apple pie, cobbler, etc. – it improves the taste big time!
5-  When your paint brush becomes hard from not having been cleaned properly, boil a few minutes in vinegar.
6 – Remove grease from clothing by using 1 T. salt to 4T of alcohol.
7 – Store apples with potatoes. It will keep potatoes from sprouting.  Use 1 part apples to 4 parts potatoes.
8 – Plant marigolds near tomatoes and other vegetables to keep bugs away from plants.
9 – Add plain gelatin to boiled icing to increase bulk and to make it stand in peaks and swirls.  Dissolve the gelatin in 2 T of cold water and add to hot syrup before removing from fire.
10 – Tiny seeds are easier to plant in an even row when sprinkled from a salt shaker
11 – Moth balls in flower beds keeps dogs away.
12 – A pail of water set in a freshly painted room will remove odor.
13 – When painting around a window, cover glass with Bonami (or rub soap).  Paint on glass – washes off with Bonami.
14 – Tepid vinegar removes decals.
15 – Use milk instead of water in making pie crust. It makes it more tender and browns easier. (1/2 C. oil or tad more – ¼ C. Milk – do not mix – just pour milk into the oil).  Put this is 2 C. (scant) flour – I use my hands to mold it – I also roll it out between two pieces of wax paper – YUM).
16 – Pie Crust – to avoid an uneven or lopsided one, put 4-5 pricks in the bottom of the crust when in the pie pan.  Might let rest 5 minutes or so before baking so it can meld together.
17 – Plant radish and cucumber seeds together to keep bugs off cucumbers.
18 – Sharpen your scissors by cutting sandpaper with them – or – snapping them together on the neck of a bottle.
19 – When boiling eggs wet the shells thoroughly with cold water before placing them in boiling water to insure against cracking.
20 – Fresh tomatoes will keep longer if stored with stem down.
21 – A good non-stain modeling clay can be made as follows: 1 C. Salt, 1 tsp alum, ½ C. Water. Mix and store in covered jar.  Will last on and on. Food coloring may be added.
22 – Sliced bananas that have been dipped in lemon or grapefruit juice for 15-30 seconds and then removed keep their natural color for several hours.
23 – Never, never use a mixture of oven cleaner, chlorine bleach and ammonia for ANY purpose. Combination of these generates a poisonous gas that can be fatal if fumes are inhaled.
24 – Egg Whites applied to a burn or scald will sooth and cause burn to heal quickly.
25 – Put candles in refrigerator for about 24 hours before using and they will burn more slowly and be dripless.
26 – Silver spoons discolored may be cleaned by rubbing them with salt before washing.  Wash with hot, soapy water.
27 – Smother grease fire with metal lid or put baking soda or salt on it.
28 – Keep flowers fresh by putting a pinch of baking soda in the water. (also have used aspirin)
29 - Remove celery from plastic bag and wrap in aluminum foil with small opening and place in refrigerator. Will last for weeks in fridge. – thanks PC for this one!
