Thanks to the combined efforts of Karen Marshall and Mark Davis, we have a wonderful new addition to the Grant County Page. These two individuals have worked together to create a list of all the soldiers who fought in the Civil War from Grant County, or elsewhere and are buried here. Have a question about any of the soldiers listed here please contact Karen Marshall or Mark Davis.
If you have additional information, service records, or photographs that you would like to have included here, please contact John Peck

NOTE: Soldiers marked with an * asterisk are buried in Grant Co., but served from elsewhere.

He was transferred to Co I, 19th Veteran Reserve Corps., at Washington, D.C. and on Nov. 16, 1865, was mustered out at Buffalo, New York. James was one of the youngest men to vol. during Civil War, being but sixteen years old at time of enlistment on Aug. 1, 1861. Before tendering his services, he had taken the precaution to prepare for any objections on account of his youth. He had marked the figures '18' on the soles of his shoes. When the recruiting officer inquired his age he replied that he was "over 18," and no further questions were asked (apparently this was common practice for underage enlistees). During his 4 years of service he was wounded 4 times losing a finger on his L hand at Chickamauga TN. Later married Miss Elizabeth J. Dame and bought a farm south-west of Fairmount which later produced 4 oil wells for him. b. 8-8-45, d. 1-28-1921.
